[IPHONE Game] Diner Dash (v1.0)

Posted Image

Diner Dash puts you in the role of Flo, an entrepreneur who dreams of owning a chain of successful restaurants. To make Flo’s dream come true, you must help her build up her business from a “greasy spoon” diner to a fine restaurant by serving customers quickly and efficiently. You have to manage tables, get customers their food when it’s ready, clean up, collect tips and seat new customers before the time runs out.

As you’re more and more successful, you can turn the tips your customers leave into bigger and better decorations and appliances for your restaurants, making improvements along the way and eventually buying new properties.

The gam features 50 levels, six different kinds of customers and two modes of play.

PuzzLoop 1.0

Posted Image

To most casual gamers, Popcap's Zuma is the first title that comes to mind when thinking about the match-three puzzle game involving a snaking line of colored balls. And after that, it's probably Luxor. But neither of these marquee names are actually the first in this category. PuzzLoop, published on the iPhone by Hudson, is actually the original that set up the formula so many others seized upon.

Well, the developer of PuzzLoop, Mitchell Corporation, wasn't about to let those better-known games stake claims on iPhone without a fight. PuzzLoop debuts on Apple's device before either Zuma or Luxor touchdown (and they are coming, to be sure) and the move for ownership should serve Mitchell and Hudson well. The game concept is still a winner after all these years (and all these clones) and PuzzLoop is a well made production.

The goal is to match three or more colored balls by launching spheres into an advancing line from the outside of the screen. The line of balls inches toward the center where your cannon is situated. By circling the screen with your finger, you aim the cannon. However, it's far easier just to tap the screen right where you want the ball to go. The aiming is very accurate with no delays, so if you miss, it's your fault. You earn bonuses by creating chain reactions, as collections of spheres slam into each other when trios are vacated. By creating hole in the line, you slow the advancement of the balls. And if you manage to match enough balls in certain sections of the line, the snaking line temporarily retreats.

PuzzLoop **** complications such as tunnels for the balls to disappear into or tornados that slip between you and your target, bouncing the sphere away. You need to think fast if your target is blocked by an obstacle, such as a line of moles, by either finding another match or throwing the ball away into a dead zone of the screen. Also, keep an eye out for treasure chests along the outer edge of the play field. If you hit the chest and whatever prize is inside, you earn bonuses and power-ups, such as slowing the line of balls to a virtual halt.

Another cool feature: You can upload your score to an online leaderboard.

PuzzLoop looks great with sharp graphics and explosive color choices. In addition to looking good, the game is accompanied by fun little themes. However, the music seemed especially loud compared to other games, so you may want to slide the volume down even if you are playing alone.

Closing Comments
Hudson and Mitchell were smart to be out front with PuzzLoop since Zuma and Luxor occupy greater mindshare. This is a solid production that looks great and plays well, making it easy to recommend to puzzler players even at the somewhat high price of $8. However, there are a lot of levels stuffed in here, giving the game solid longevity.

Enigmo (v 1.1.2)

Posted Image

Drippy Mess: Get the water, oil, or lava from one vessel to another using limited puzzle pieces in Enigmo.

Enigmo is a 3-D puzzle game in which you have to manipulate various objects-slides, bumpers, cannons and such-to maneuver cascading streams of flowing liquid from one vessel to another. You can move or rotate the puzzle pieces to divert the stream of droplets so they can reach their target. The faster you manage this the better, as your points are determined by your speed (and a rapidly descending bonus clock in one corner of the screen).

Enigmo uses the iPhone's pinching multi-touch control to let you zoom in and out of action; you can control the orientation and direction of your puzzle pieces by *** on them and rotating with your finger. In between each level, you can save, just like in the Mac OS X version of this game, which makes it simple to restore if you need to quit or take a break.

The game's 50 levels get progressively more difficult, with more obstacles, more puzzle pieces, and different kinds of fluids (water, oil, and lava) to keep track of. Some of the puzzle pieces can be a bit confusing to use and some of the levels can use a bit of play-balancing to make them less difficult, but all told it's a lot of fun.

There's no music to speak of, but Pangea's populated Enigmo with sound effects of fluid hitting objects and funneling through the various puzzle pieces, which creates a rhythm all its own. And while the background in the above screenshot may seem rather stark, the colorful puzzle pieces and animation make Enigmo a feast for the eyes, too.

Enigmo is compatible with any iPhone and iPod touch running the iPhone 2.0 software update.

Cro-Mag Rally 1.0.2

Posted Image

Cro-Mag Rally originally made its debut on the Mac. It's a go-cart racing game featuring cartoon-style cavemen and dinosaurs, and it was popular back in pre Mac OS X days. It's one of Pangea's biggest hits, in fact, so it's understandable why they'd give it another try here.

Let It Snow: Adapted from its Mac origins to run on the iPhone, Cro-Mag Rally lets you race go-carts along many different tracks.

Cro-Mag Rally makes an easy conversion to the iPhone. Graphics are large and clear, the sound effects and soundtrack of the original game are here, too, and gameplay has been retained. You guide your caveman (or cavewoman) through a series of courses that wind to and fro, past hazards (lava pits, tornados and such), while you pick up power ups (like bones you can throw as weapons, extra traction for your tires, and oil slicks) you can use against the other drivers.

There are two main game modes-Race, in which you're trying to beat the other computer-controlled players to the finish line, or Gather, in which you're trying to pick up objects around the track as quickly as possible. And there are a number of different track options-everything from a desert setting to a jungle environment, ancient Egypt and an underwater course (Atlantis) that trades in the caveman carts for submarines.

For the most part, you control vehicle acceleration using on-screen forward and reverse buttons along with the iPhone's accelerometer, to control left and right direction. You can also tap an icon to let loose with your weapons if need be.

The game lets you choose from several different vehicles, each with different performance characteristics. Some accelerate better, others take corners in more control. The powerups can also help augment your vehicle's handling capabilities.

I found the on-screen controls to be somewhat awkwardly placed and a little too small for my fingers to use conveniently. I'd often find myself stopping mid-track for no apparent reason, only to discover that my finger had slipped slightly off the "hot spot" for the gas pedal.

Pangea has wisely included options that let you adjust difficulty, steering sensitivity and other settings. iPhone users can also turn off vibration, a fun but distraction option that can also wear down the iPhone's battery.

Ultimately, Cro-Mag Rally is a fine iPhone game and really helps demonstrate what the first generation of action games for this new platform can do. The novelty wears thin quickly, however-a problem I don't have with Pangea's other iPhone game, the kinetic puzzle game Enigmo.

Cro-Mag Rally is compatible with any iPhone or iPod touch running the iPhone 2.0 software update.

Jewel Quest II v 1.0.1

Posted Image

If you enjoy the fine art of matching three colors, then the iPhone is quickly becoming the gaming destination for you. This week, I-play joins the fight for gem-matching dominance with Jewel Quest II, originally developed as a casual PC game by iWin. The Jewel Quest series has been successful for I-play on mobile, but this iPhone/iPod Touch edition is not a port of those admirable efforts. JQ2 has been rebuilt for the iPhone with crisper graphics and more than 50 puzzles.

Jewel Quest is an example of what I like to call "Bejeweled-plus." By that, I mean the core of the game is essentially Bejeweled, but then something is added on top of that foundation. In Jewel Quest, every time to match a trio (or more) of gems, you color the backdrop behind it. You must fill in the entire background to complete the stage before time runs out. At first, you are only required to turn the game field gold, but soon you must repaint the backdrop a second time in silver. It's a simple addition to an established (and still fun) formula that gives the JQ2 an extra boost over its obvious inspiration.

Matters are complicated further by the ever-changing shapes of the game fields and the appearance of unmovable rocks. If you are careless and just go for quick, easy matches in odd-shaped fields, you can really paint yourself into a corner with a single uncolored space hanging off in some remote alcove. In situations like this, you better hope you have some banked gold coins. Every trio of coins you match gives you one "free space." Just touch the pesky spot on the field and then tap the gold coin icon in the lower right corner of the screen to flip the background. These are lifesavers when the clock is about to run out and you're furiously trying to match your way down to a corner.

Between stages, JQ2 tells the story of Rupert, an adventurer in the heart of Africa in search of both a missing girl and fabulous treasure. Is the story really in any way connected to the puzzle action? No, but it's a well-written tale there if you want to read it. Otherwise, you can just breeze past these screens by tapping a lion head at the top of the story screen.

Jewel Quest 2 only uses the touch-screen -- there are no tilt or shake controls in this game, unlike Trism or Diamond Twister. The touch-screen controls are accurate thanks to the size of each gem (always nice to see banana hands-friendly games). I'm split on the absence of the accelerometer, though. On one hand, the game certainly doesn't need it. However, there are other match-three puzzlers out there that use it effectively.

JQ2 is currently $8.99 in the App Store, making it one of the more expensive games. While JQ2 is a good game, that is pricey for a game well over a year old. (This is my chief complaint with Bejeweled 2, as well.) The App Store pricing situation is still shaking out with publishers constantly adjusting prices to find the sweet spot. If you are a huge JQ fan, $9 may not trouble you in the least. But if you are a more value-oriented gamer, may I suggest I-play's Numba, which is currently just $4?

try this bro:

Instructions:

1. Open the .ipa file using WinRAR. I don't know in Mac
2. Extract the file named iTunesMetadata.plist. Open this file using TextEdit or TextMate.
3. Replace where it says name@email.com with your iTunes store email address.
4. For extra safety measures, change where it says "price=" from 9990 to 000.
5. Save the file and update the archive when prompted.
6. Import it into iTunes, double ** it, and enter your password.
